How to get started as a consultant
When starting your own business as a consultant, organization is the key word. There are many issues that need to be organized - and getting them right from the very beginning increases the chances of success and eases things up later on. You need to organize your daily workflow, your new office, the daily routine and keeping the booking and taxes. Because you are a consultant, people you work for will expect you to be organized and efficient, this will increase their confidence in you considerably and help your business grow.

Start by determining the legal requirements for your business and establish the legal and fiscal foundations. Right from the beginning, make sure things are correct, legal and sound, to avoid problems later on. It is in your best interest to have a sound tax and accounting plan, even if this is not the most glamorous part of having your own business.

You will be the sole proprietor of your business, which is not difficult to accomplish from the legal point of view, and you don't need to invest too much time or money in accomplishing this. However, be aware that, when you become the sole proprietor of a business, you also accept all the business liabilities on a personal level. This means that, from the legal point of view, you are personally responsible for all the business problems that may occur. Your personal assets and finances are at risk if your business is not going very well, or if you are being sued by somebody. This is just one of the risks involved in starting your own business.

Getting into a partnership is a similar solution to being the sole proprietor of a business, but you will have somebody to share the legal and financial liabilities with. This is also quite easy to accomplish, and the interested parties have to sign a contract with the details of the partnership deal. In some cases, there are the so-called "silent partners", who do not participate in the actual development of the business, but share all the legal and financial obligations (such as a person who has no business and consulting skills, but has some money and is willing to help you out).

You can also start a corporation - the most complicated method, from both the legal and the fiscal points of view. If you have a corporation, there is a certain protection between you, as a person, and the liabilities and assets of that respective corporation. Be sure to check the law, as this protection layer varies considerably from one state to another.

Once you have decided on the type of business you will have, you need to create a sound business plan, to include everything you can think of - your approach to handling the daily business, how to market your business and what your funding sources will be. It's better to think of all these aspects now, when you have the time, then when it will already be too late.

Next you need to establish and design your work environment - according to your budget, the type of business you are in and your personal needs. This is vital, because it will tell your clients what kind of person you are, and why they should trust you.
